Woodcut printing is experiencing a massive resurgence in popularity. Beautiful multicolor prints are now seen not only in galleries but as part of the graphic identity of stores ranging from Whole Foods to Starbucks.
Woodcut printing's popularity has always been its accessibility. It is easy to learn and does not require expensive tools.
Join Charlottesville printmaker Josef Beery in a two day workshop introducing the process of woodcut printmaking. We will find our inspiration on a wildflower walk and then work from sketches we make of natural treasures we find. (Drawing skill is not required...the class is open to students of all levels.)
Learn an Appalachian tradition, discover new weaving techniques, work with unique basket making materials, have an incredible time making a beautiful, usable, basket you will be proud of!
Used to pick berries in, this basket is designed with a ‘hump’ in the bottom of it to help distribute the weight of berries as their weight accumulates as berries are placed into the basket. Students will learn how to weave in the round, then pick up the base and weave it on their knee, then shape the basket so that it gently curves upward and can accommodate the sides of the oak handle. Basket woven with reed – many basic weaving techniques will be covered. Especially nice displayed hanging up so base can be seen when not in use. Overall measurements are 10” X 10”.
A one day workshop for beginners and those who would like to refresh their watercolor skills. There will be a discussion of materials, a demonstration of various techniques and one-on-one guidance in doing each technique exercise. Students will also have a chance to use what they learn to complete a painting. Open to teens and adults.
Also offered December 4th 2010

This follow-up to WATERCOLOR BASICS meets for five 3-hour classes. It is a great way to apply and build upon the skills acquired from the introductory class and also a helpful refresher for those who have experience with watercolor. Each class begins with a demonstration and the introduction of new techniques. The student then has time to work on what he or she is inspired by from photos or still life set ups, with Rebecca's guidance, critique and support. Open to teens and adults.
Class meets every Monday from October 18th to November 15th, 2010
For adults who would love to be introduced to horses and their energy and experience their gift for inspiring us to find our creative voices.
In the morning students have a hands-on introduction to safe and friendly horses in a beautiful and peaceful space. They learn to groom, handle, lead, direct and play with the horses. Midday is spent having lunch together as well as a quiet time to reflect on the morning’s experience. In the afternoon we move to the classroom at CraftWorks and make art ~either teacher-guided or self-motivated creativity using the materials of choice. Journaling, poetry, painting, drawing, collage, photography can all be used to create a memory book to take home.

If you have worked with polymer clay or taken our polymer clay class at CraftWorks, this is your chance to continue exploring this versatile material. You’ll have plenty of workspace and equipment. Any materials you need will be available for purchase. Bring anything you want to work on and be sure to bring an ornate button or other texture that we can swap and make molds from. We can see what others are doing with their work and learn from each other. Studio fee $15.
Another traditional basket, this kindling basket will come in handy for many things at home such as picking flowers, gathering vegetables or on the kitchen counter. It has a solidly woven base, sloping sides and makes use of dyed weavers. Using a D shaped oak handle, students will learn how to weave a solid base, decrease the number of rows on each side of the basket to create its unusual shape, and lash on a rim. Color choices will be offered to the students. Overall measurements are 19” long, 12” high and 8” wide. Sure to become one of your favorite baskets!
Also offered April 23rd, 2011
The classic egg basket was used in the Appalachian area for collecting and transporting eggs. We will be making a replica of this basket using oak hoops and reed ribs and weavers. Students will learn how to make an ‘ear’, how to sight, whittle and insert ribs and how to weave this basket on the frame that is created with the rib structure. Overall measurements are 10” X 10”. An interesting history of this unique basket will also be shared by the teacher during the class.
